ISO 50001

The objective of ISO 50001 is to define the requirements for an energy management system (SGE) that allows improving the energy performance of the organization.

The standard covers issues related to use, consumption and energy efficiency, in order to reduce energy costs and emissions of greenhouse gases.

The ISO 50001 is applicable to all types of organizations and, since it’s based on the same common structure as other ISO standards, it might be an option to integrate this EMS with other existing management systems.

PAS 2050

The responsibility for emissions of greenhouse gases (GHG) are often seen only from a national and sectoral perspective or associated with large multinational companies' viewpoints. However, the responsibility for the issue is transversal to all involved components in the chain-of-value between companies and agents regardless of business sector.

Considering the growing companies’ concern in assessing the emissions, it was developed a standard tool to determine the carbon footprint of products and services named PAS 2050, based on the methodology of life cycle analysis (ISO 14040 and ISO 14044). This standard is the most used tool worldwide for calculating the carbon footprint and it is auditable by the leading certification companies.

Carbon footprint is understand as GHG emissions that result from the processes of developing a service or product that happen during the raw materials exploitation until the moment of  its recycling or disposal, going through processing, design and use, that is, what may be termed as assessment of a products life cycle.

The implementation of the PAS 2050 may help companies to:

  • Perform an internal assessment of GHG emissions in the life cycle of its existing products to identify GHG emissions hotspots and opportunities to reduce costs / energy associated
  • Evaluate product configurations, production methods, transport, raw materials choices and suppliers selection processes
  • Develop low carbon programs and reduce the impact of the activity
  • Provide elements for the establishment of a corporate responsibility report

For consumers, PAS 2050 provides a common basis for understanding the assessment of GHG emissions throughout the life cycle.
